The tastiest piece of meat ever
When my brother and I were growing up in the Prins Clausplein tower, we didn't really have a nice place to play indoors. There were vases everywhere and fragile items that were valuable to my mother.
So we often went outside and pretended to be adults. We were 12 and thought adults apparently made fires, so we did too. That was fun, but we wanted more: to eat something from our little fire adventure.
The next time, we brought my mother's cast iron pan, some utensils, and even some salt. We put the pan on the fire and fried strips of beef that we had secretly prepared in the small kitchen of our apartment. A little oil, just like our mother always did, and then the meat went in. After a few minutes of exciting flipping, it was done. We divided it with a stick and our hands, because we didn't dare to take a knife from the house. The meat was perfectly medium rare. I still don't know how that happened, but it was incredible. Probably the best piece of meat I've ever eaten. Because we had made it ourselves.
Passion for design and functionality
How do things work? What's the technology behind them? Why does something look the way it does? Even as a child, I asked myself these questions. I was the child who wanted to unscrew a toaster or take apart a computer to understand how everything worked. That curiosity grew into my work as a product designer. With BBQ2GO, I wanted to create a minimalist product with a clear function: to give people the same experience I had as a child, by bringing fire and food together.
Three generations
My father was always an entrepreneur. He sold everything and ran multiple businesses. Around my twentieth, I started working with him. After two decades of entrepreneurship, my wife and I launched Pizzarette, which became a great success in the Netherlands.
Because I love barbecuing, the idea for the perfect compact barbecue came to me: the right balance of power, heat, and size. My goal was to make barbecuing very easy for novice grillers who don't always have the space, experience, or equipment for a regular barbecue.
Father and son adventure
My son also became interested in the product and the company. During his International Business studies in Groningen, he suggested building a webshop and expanding BBQ2GO online. After a few weeks, he decided to drop out of his studies and embark on this adventure with me.
